In a Japanese-style room, you don't stand up and open the fusuma. Sit down and open.
First, sit in front of the fusuma.
Place the hand closest to the fusuma handle on the fusuma handle to open it about two-thirds of the way.
Close the fusuma with the hand closest to the handle for about two-thirds of the way, then switch hands to close the door.
